NAME: The region was referred to as Htetovo in a Serbian Charter.
Ancient Greek :Oaeneum. Albanian: TETOVA
Tetovo is located in the northwestern part of North Macedonia but it is different form the other places in North Macedonia because the majority of the population is ethnic Albanian. Tetovo has been under many different empires; from the Mycenae and Illyrians, to the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, giving the city a vast range of diverse cultures.
The biggest tourist attraction is visit of the old town and its 15th century painted mosque, named “The Painted Mosque”.The monument owes its name to the countless painted panels that cover the facades. More than 30,000 eggs were needed to make the painting of this one-of-a-kind religious building. There were several mosques of this type formerly in the region but that of Tetovo is the last that remains.
Tetovo has also the city museum named, “The museum of Tetovo”, established in 1950. It contains history of Tetovo and is situated in the Memorial House of Central Committee of the Communist Party of Macedonia.
