This city is a mix of tradition and modernity. In short here it is something about the traditional part and regarding the modernity we will let you discover during the visit.
Peja is situated in the eastern section of the Accursed Mountains in western Kosovo, located in a strategic position on a tributary of the White Drin.
The city was ruled by the Serbs for 300 years after a Serbian Grand Prince liberated the city from the Byzantine Empire in the late 12th century. Afterwards, Serbian archbishops built houses and churches in the city, which later became a major religious center.
After it fell to the Ottomans in 1455, the city’s was known by its Turkish name, İpek. Nearly five centuries later, the First Balkan War of 1912-1913 ended the Ottoman regime.
Its Ottoman and medieval Serbian architecture are still proudly on display and can be seen in its mosques, churches, and its bazaar.
One of the best spots in Peja to people-watch and get a peek into local life is the Old Bazaar.
